Physiological, Anthropometrical, and Self Concept Changes in Overweight College Women as Affected by Exercise and Voluntary Diet
The purpose of this study was twofold: to analyze the effects of a combination exercise program and voluntary diet on selected anthropometric and physiological variables of overweight girls at South Dakota State University, and to determine if measurable changes in self-concept were evident. Hypothesis 1. In the selected anthropometric and physiological variables of overweight girls there is a significant. improvement as a result of participation in a voluntary diet and prescribed exercise program. 2. There is no significant measurable change in self concept of overweight girls as a result of participation in a voluntary diet and prescribed exercise program. Limitations and Delimitations. 1. The study was limited to fifty-five South Dakota State University volunteer women students with body fat of twenty-five percent or greater. 2. The diet was a voluntary diet controlled by each individual subject with the aid of a calorie chart and counseling on the use of the calorie chart by the investigators 3. The exercises completed by the Experimental Group were limited to warm-up exercises the first ten minutes of each session, two levels of the XBX Royal Canadian progressive exercise program, and a progressive jogging program. The exercise program was conducted Monday through Friday for a total of thirty-six training days. 4. Only the variables of percent body fat, weight, selected girth measurements, cardiovascular fitness, and self-concept were investigated
Simulation of the White Dwarf -- White Dwarf galactic background in the LISA data
LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) is a proposed space mission, which
will use coherent laser beams exchanged between three remote spacecraft to
detect and study low-frequency cosmic gravitational radiation. In the low-part
of its frequency band, the LISA strain sensitivity will be dominated by the
incoherent superposition of hundreds of millions of gravitational wave signals
radiated by inspiraling white-dwarf binaries present in our own galaxy. In
order to estimate the magnitude of the LISA response to this background, we
have simulated a synthesized population that recently appeared in the
literature. We find the amplitude of the galactic white-dwarf binary background
in the LISA data to be modulated in time, reaching a minimum equal to about
twice that of the LISA noise for a period of about two months around the time
when the Sun-LISA direction is roughly oriented towards the Autumn equinox.
Since the galactic white-dwarfs background will be observed by LISA not as a
stationary but rather as a cyclostationary random process with a period of one
year, we summarize the theory of cyclostationary random processes and present
the corresponding generalized spectral method needed to characterize such
process. We find that, by measuring the generalized spectral components of the
white-dwarf background, LISA will be able to infer properties of the
distribution of the white-dwarfs binary systems present in our Galaxy.Comment: 14 pages and 6 figures. Submitted to Classical and Quantum Gravity

Observation of a Free-Shercliff-Layer Instability in Cylindrical Geometry
We report on observations of a free-Shercliff-layer instability in a
Taylor-Couette experiment using a liquid metal over a wide range of Reynolds
numbers, . The free Shercliff layer is formed by imposing a
sufficiently strong axial magnetic field across a pair of differentially
rotating axial endcap rings. This layer is destabilized by a hydrodynamic
Kelvin-Helmholtz-type instability, characterized by velocity fluctuations in
the plane. The instability appears with an Elsasser number above
unity, and saturates with an azimuthal mode number which increases with the
Elsasser number. Measurements of the structure agree well with 2D global linear
mode analyses and 3D global nonlinear simulations. These observations have
implications for a range of rotating MHD systems in which similar shear layers

Novel self-assembled morphologies from isotropic interactions
We present results from particle simulations with isotropic medium range
interactions in two dimensions. At low temperature novel types of aggregated
structures appear. We show that these structures can be explained by
spontaneous symmetry breaking in analytic solutions to an adaptation of the
spherical spin model. We predict the critical particle number where the
symmetry breaking occurs and show that the resulting phase diagram agrees well

Anaerobic bacteria commonly colonize the lower airways of intubated ICU patients
ObjectivesTo investigate respiratory tract colonization by aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in mechanically ventilated patients.MethodsBacterial colonization of the stomach and the respiratory tract was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed over time in 41 consecutive mechanically ventilated patients in a Swedish intensive care unit (ICU), with special emphasis on elucidation of the role of anaerobic bacteria in the lower respiratory tract. Samples were taken from the oropharynx, gastric juice, subglottic space and trachea within 24 h (median 14 h) of intubation, and then every third day until day 18 and every fifth day until day 33.ResultsThe patients were often heavily colonized with microorganisms not considered to belong to a healthy normal oropharyngeal and gastric flora on admission to the ICU. A majority harbored enterococci, coagulase-negative staphylococci and Candida spp. in at least one site on day 1. Anaerobic bacteria, mainly peptostreptococci and Prevotella spp., were isolated from subglottic and/or tracheal secretions in 59% of the patients. Different routes of tracheal colonization for different groups of microorganisms were found. Primary or concomitant colonization of the oropharynx with staphylococci, enterococci, enterobacteria and Candida was often seen, while Pseudomonas spp., other non-fermenting Gram-negative rods and several anaerobic species often primarily colonized the trachea, indicating exogenous or direct gastrointestinal routes of colonization.ConclusionsMechanically ventilated patients were heavily colonized in their lower airways by potential pathogenic microorganisms, including a high load of anaerobic bacteria. Sulphate-controlled Diversity of Subterranean Microbial Communities over Depth in Deep Groundwater with Opposing Gradients of Sulphate and Methane
The groundwater system in Olkiluoto, Finland, is stratified with a mixing layer at a depth of approximately 300m between sulphate-rich, methane-poor and sulphate-poor, methane-rich groundwaters. New sequence library data obtained by 454 pyrotag sequencing of the v4v6 16S rDNA region indicated that sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) dominated the mixing layer while SRB could not be detected in the deep sulphate-poor groundwater samples. With the indispensable support of the sequence data, it could be demonstrated that sulphate was the only component needed to trigger a very large community transition in deep sulphate-poor, methane-rich groundwater from a non-sulphate-reducing community comprising Hydrogenophaga, Pseudomonas, Thiobacillus, Fusibacter, and Lutibacter to a sulphate-reducing community with Desulfobacula, Desulfovibrio, Desufobulbaceae, Desulfobacterium, Desulfosporosinus, and Desulfotignum. Experiments with biofilms and planktonic microorganisms in flow cells under in situ conditions confirmed that adding sulphate to the sulphate-poor groundwater generated growth of cultivable SRB and detectable SRB-related sequences. It was also found that the 16S rDNA diversity of the biofilms was conserved over 103 d and that there was great similarity in diversity between the microorganisms in the biofilms and in the flowing groundwater. This work demonstrates that the presence/absence of only one geochemical parameter, i.e., sulphate, in the groundwater significantly influenced the diversity of the investigated subterranean microbial community
